Chapter Seven – Jessica

I invited Michael to go and watch a movie with me. She preened herself in front of the mirror, deciding to settle on the yellow sundress with pockets at the sides. Not exactly big pockets, but pockets, which raised the value of the dress a thousand times.

I can’t believe it. Someone like Michael actually wanted to take things potentially further at some point? She barely would have believed it herself. Happy with her final look, she combed down her hair, finished applying some mascara, and waited for him to arrive.

In the kitchen, as she drank some coffee, she noticed two people standing still just outside her house, talking to one another. Both were tall, muscular individuals—a man and a woman. She didn’t recognize either of them, but you didn’t have to recognize everyone in the area.

The only thing that particularly stuck out about them was the fact that they kept glancing towards her house. At one point, the woman’s eyes met Jessica’s, and a rather sly smile spread across her face.

A sense of foreboding entered Jessica. She couldn’t help but think those two might be a part of the bear community, and she discreetly took a picture of them, zoomed in. Quality wasn’t the best, but she sent it to Michael. “Do you recognize these two? They’re outside my house, and I feel like they’re staking me out.”

A moment later, Michael called her. She jumped, before answering the call. “Yes?”

“I’m coming over there as soon as possible. Don’t go out, and make sure they can’t see you. I’ll phone you when I’m there.”

“You think it’s dangerous?”

“That’s Beatrice and Robert outside your place. I don’t know their intent, but I think it better if you keep out of the way.”

Just as he finished saying that, the man and woman started walking up to her front door. “They’re coming to my front door now!”

“Shit,” he cursed. “Don’t answer! I’m coming!” He hung up, and a panic seized her soul at the thought of dealing with two bear shifters that likely would show great animosity towards her.

Knock, knock.

“I know you’re in there,” called the woman. “I just want to talk. That’s all. We won’t do anything.”

“No offense, but I don’t think I can trust you on that!” she replied, after her heart thundered like crazy for a moment.

“Then we can have a discussion through the window!”

After a pause, Jessica sucked in her breath and opened the front door, even though Michael had warned her otherwise. It’s broad daylight. Surely they wouldn’t think about harming me. “Michael called me. He knows you’re both here,” she said. “And he’s coming this way.”

“Then I suppose we better make the talk fast, then.” Beatrice gave her a rather smug smile. The other man, known as Robert, looked less than impressed with Jessica. “It’s simple. You know more about our community than you should for a human. Normally we don’t allow such things to enter our community, because it’s a risk for us to be exposed to so many people.
